The Shape of Things 11 January 2010

It's commonly held that a smell can transport us anywhere in time. And that's undeniably true. But time travel is not the exclusive province of the nose. The eyes can take us on quite a ride, too.

For me, it can be as simple as spying an old typeface. The mere shape of long-out-of-style letters can dislodge an attic full of memories. There was a time when these letters were fresh and new and a sign of modernity. Now they are reminders that all things grow old.
