Tossed 28 March 2005

At sunset my friend Joe and I headed out to the barrier island that protects Fort Pierce from the sea. We wanted to inspect up close the damage wrought by September's twin hurricane strikes. Images of destruction were everywhere--missing roofs on one side of the road, mobile homes twisted like trash ties on the other.

As we moved closer to the water, I expected to find more and more destruction. But instead we found only beach and waves and people carrying on with their lives. It was a welcome sight.
