There is nothing quite so discerning as the eye of a dog. It registers all with a mixture of curiosity, wariness and duty. Even late at night, when I have been motionless for the better part of an hour, I know the slightest movement--the scratch of a nose, the flex of a neck--will activate that shiny orb in the dark.
