Two weeks ago, during my visit to Fort Pierce, Florida, I wandered around town inspecting the damage left by last fall's hurricanes. The destruction was so widespread and severe that many houses remain unfixed nearly nine months later. In the poorer sections of town, where rows and rows of squat houses sit in uncomfortable proximity, the damage was even worse. Many of the roofs still sport the blue plastic sheeting installed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the weeks after the storm.

Still, everything is relative, even hurricane damage, and it turns out the blue roof folks are the lucky ones. The hurricanes converted this unlucky abode into a giant dollhouse. The only thing missing was a love seat, a sewing machine, and a willowy stiff-legged blonde.
